Blaavand Point: Birds and Nature
Join us at the tip of Denmark, its westernmost point, where sky and sea are always in motion and nature feels remarkably close. We meet at Blåvand Bird Observatory and begin with a truly special experience: seeing wild birds being ringed up close. You’ll watch how ringing is carried out calmly and respectfully, from net to hand and back to freedom. You’ll learn why birds are ringed, what the rings tell us, and how small data points become valuable knowledge about migration, survival, and routes. We’ll also talk about the species that are most common right now, and you’ll learn to spot differences in age, plumage, and the small features most people miss.
After the ringing session, we lace up our shoes and head out into the dunes on a relaxed, guided walk. You’ll feel the wind, the sand, and the raw West Coast as the landscape opens up around us. We’ll find the best viewpoints and stand high in the terrain with wide views over sea, dunes, and heathland.
With binoculars and a spotting scope, you’ll catch the details, even when birds are far out over the water. Some days migration comes in waves, other days as single birds, but there’s almost always something to follow.
With a bit of luck, we may also spot seals resting in the surf or lying on sandbanks like grey “stones”.
